Transferable Skills Analysis

Online Referral Form
A transferable skills analysis (TSA) is a helpful tool utilized by vocational professionals to determine a client's existing skills and aptitudes that could transfer to alternate occupations.   A TSA considers not only skills learned through employment but also education/training, hobbies and recreational and volunteer activities.  During a TSA assessment, the assessor performs a thorough intake, capturing information on the client's social, education and employment history, and current medical symptoms and limitations (physical, psychological and/or cognitive) that impact his or her vocational capacities.

For example, if an individual was employed as a cashier or salesperson for a majority of his or her employment history and has volunteer experience as a greeter with a not-for-profit society, the vocational rehabilitation (VR) consultant determines his or her transferable skills during the intake interview.  In this instance, it is likely the individual has skills in utilizing electronic point of sale (POS) systems, typing, sales, customer service, coordination, and interpersonal relations.   Once identified, these skills are then compared to alternate, potential careers taking into consideration any limitations or restrictions.  If the individual suffered an injury to his or her ankle during a motor vehicle accident and can no longer stand for prolonged periods (a primary job demand in employment as a cashier), a potential alternate occupation may be receptionist or office clerk.

If needed, vocational assessment tools such as career search and preference and interest inventories can be introduced during the TSA to identify potential alternate careers based on the client's areas of interest and employment preferences.  In the field of vocational rehabilitation, the ultimate outcome of a TSA is to assist the individual in developing realistic employment goals based on his or her transferable skills while taking into consideration his or her physical, psychological and/or cognitive limitations.   In addition to a list of potential alternate occupations, average provincial wages for each occupation and further recommendations (i.e., training) are identified in the TSA summative report.

A TSA is suitable for individuals unable to resume their pre-injury employment due to limitations and restrictions following accident or injury interested in exploring alternate vocational options based on their transferable skills.  Through this tool our team of VR professionals assist injured individuals in better understanding their abilities and help make informed decisions about their vocational future.
